Anamorphic Desqueeze - anamorphic lens support

Anamorphic lenses modify the aspect ratio of images by horizontally compressing them during capture. This process fits a wider field of view onto the standard sensor size. Consequently, during shooting, the image in the viewfinder appears unnaturally squeezed horizontally, as it's displayed in the standard aspect ratio of the iPhone camera sensor.

ProCamera includes a special feature that desqueezes this compressed image, displaying it in the viewfinder with a normal aspect ratio. This feature is called Anamorphic Desqueeze. The Anamorphic Desqueeze feature enables you to capture wider images with the correct aspect ratio when using a physical anamorphic lens for photography or video recording.

ProCamera supports the desqueezing of 1.33x and 1.55x anamorphic lenses.

Enabling Anamorphic Desqueeze

  1. On the ProCamera Capture Screen, open the Control Panel.
  2. Swipe left to access the second page of the Control Panel.
  3. Tap the Anamorphic Desqueeze button and select one of the available Anamorphic Desqueeze options (1.33x or 1.55x).

When the Anamorphic Desqueeze feature is enabled in the Control Panel, the Anamorphic Desqueeze toggle button appears on the Capture Screen. It toggles the Anamorphic Desqueeze on/off. The previously selected Anamorphic Desqueeze option (1.33x or 1.55x) will be used.

Previewing videos with Anamorphic Desqueeze applied

In ProCamera, open a video and tap the Anamorphic Desqueeze button at the bottom right of the screen. This lets you switch between normal and desqueezed aspect ratios. Select your preference and press Play to view.

Saving anamorphically desqueezed videos

Note that currently, ProCamera only supports the previewing of anamorphically desqueezed videos, but does not allow saving them with the applied anamorphic desqueeze. Videos can be desqueezed during the editing process using video editing software such as Premiere Pro, DaVinci Resolve, or Final Cut Pro.

Previewing and saving photos with Anamorphic Desqueeze applied

  1. Open your photo in the single media view in ProCamera and then tap the Edit button.
  2. Go to the ProCut section in the Editing Studio and tap on the Anamorphic Desqueeze button.
  3. Choose from the available Anamorphic Desqueeze options (1.33x or 1.55x), or select Off to remove the effect from your image.
  4. Save your edits.

Important note when using add-on anamorphic lens

When using any external lens with ProCamera, it's important to ensure that ProCamera is set to Single Lens mode and not Multi Lens mode. In Single Lens mode, ProCamera captures photos or videos using only the lens to which your add-on anamorphic lens is attached.

To activate Single Lens mode, switch to semi-automatic SI or manual M exposure mode. These modes allow the use of only the selected lens, which is essential for proper photo or video shooting with an add-on anamorphic lens. In contrast, the automatic A mode operates as Multi Lens mode, where all lenses are active at the same time and not suitable for use with an add-on lens.

For more on lens selection and the differences between Single Lens and Multi Lens modes, see this article.
