ProCamera lets you set focus and exposure right on the viewfinder, so you can choose what the photo is focused on and how bright it is with a single tap. Two control elements handle this: the blue Focus Square for focus and the yellow Exposure Circle for exposure. Drag or place them anywhere on the viewfinder, and the app sets the optimal focus and exposure for that spot based on the subject's distance and the lighting.
Note that the focus and exposure control elements work in every exposure mode: automatic A mode, semi-automatic SI mode, and manual M mode.
How the Exposure control element affects ISO and Exposure Time
When you move the yellow Exposure Circle, the app may adjust both the ISO and the Exposure Time to reach the optimal exposure for that spot.
AUTO: focus and exposure in the center of the viewfinder
When you launch the app, the focus and exposure control elements are active and sit in the center of the viewfinder, labeled 'AUTO'. They fade out after a few seconds, but the camera keeps running in auto-focus and auto-exposure, metering the scene from the center of the screen.
The app sets focus, exposure, and white balance for you. It works like a point-and-shoot camera: aim, tap the Shutter button, and ProCamera handles the rest.
Setting focus and exposure together on one spot
To focus and expose for a specific area or object, tap that spot in the viewfinder. Both control elements move there together, and the app sets the focus and exposure for that point based on the subject's distance and the lighting.
Using the Focus and Exposure control elements separately
You can set focus and exposure independently: place the Focus Square on the subject you want sharp, and put the Exposure Circle on the area whose brightness you want the app to meter for. There are two ways to split them apart:
- Tap the center of the viewfinder. This switches between AUTO (both control elements centered) and separate focus and exposure control elements.
- Drag a control element away from the other. Move either one to a new spot in the viewfinder to separate the two.
By default the blue Focus Square is the primary control and moves first. You can switch the primary to the yellow Exposure Circle in Settings (Settings > Exposure > Touch Priority: On) so it moves first instead.
Focus and Exposure control elements in SI and M modes
When you enable manual focus in SI or M mode, the Manual Focus dial appears and the Focus Square leaves the viewfinder.
In manual M mode, the Exposure Circle leaves the viewfinder when you tap the M button on the Manual Controls panel, or tap the ISO or Exposure Time button in the top bar.
In semi-automatic SI mode, the Exposure Circle stays visible. Tapping the SI button on the Manual Controls panel, or the ISO or Exposure Time button in the top bar, locks it in place.
Locking and unlocking the Focus and Exposure control elements
Lock one or both control elements to keep the focus and/or exposure value you've set–even when the scene changes. The app holds that value until you unlock or reposition the element, which helps you get consistent results across a series of photos. You can lock focus and exposure independently, either once or permanently for every time you open the app.
One-time lock
To lock focus or exposure, press and hold the corresponding control element for a second. To unlock it, press and hold it again. You can lock and unlock each control element individually. The control elements adapt to their current state, with a lock icon indicating locked controls.
Permanent lock
You can set focus and exposure to lock automatically:
- On the Capture Screen, open the Control Panel.
- Tap the F/E Lock button to enable it. The F/E Lock icon turns blue when it is on.
To unlock a permanently locked control element, press and hold it for a second.
To turn the permanent lock off again, repeat the steps above. A white F/E Lock icon in the Control Panel means the automatic lock is disabled.
